One of the most remarkable things about these texts from Jesus in the sermon on the mount is the incredible calling of God on our lives to become like Jesus and interact with the world in the same manner that he does. And the hope in all of this is that it is God the Father who pours forth the blessing of himself upon us in such an abundant manner as we walk in his power (the Spirit) so that our lives actually bring forth the very fruit concerning which Jesus is teaching in this text.
It is the one who knows a poverty of spirit (not making much of self) and knows an urgency to bring peace into every relationship who is then able to turn the other cheek and walk an extra mile. That poverty of spirit and that pursuit of peace comes only by the Spirit. It is a gift. And for that reason those who know such a spirit residing in them recognize that they are blessed by the Father who has given such a heart to them.
Truly we are a blessed people, Jubilee, for God has revealed his truth and light in our lives! And truly we are a people totally dependent upon the Spirit of God if we are to live lives that are fully pleasing to God and bear his intended fruit in every good work. (See Colossians 1:9-14 for a prayer you can pray for your family and Jubilee).
Therefore, as dependent children, put on a spirit of prayer, calling on the name of the LORD moment by moment throughout each day. Let’s become even more, the intercessors for our children and for one another. The light and salt of our lives will bear the fruit intended by our God as he answers those prayers and works to bring glory to his name through us.
Growing and praying with you,
Pastor Dan
